Canada and Mexico have maintained a positive and constructive diplomatic relationship for the past 80 years, however, due to an increase in asylum claims filed by Mexican nationals that are denied, withdrawn, or abandoned, and in order to preserve the integrity of the immigration system, the Government of Canada has adjusted its travel requirements for Mexican nationals.
As of February 29, 2024, Mexicans traveling to Canada will be required to comply with new travel requirements.
As a background to this decision, this measure was requested by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau three months ago, which has been discussed between both governments, resulting in a decision to maintain the eTA with some restrictions, and that those who do not comply with the new requirements to apply for an eTA will have to apply for a Canadian visa.
It is important to consider that, if you already have an eTA, it will automatically be cancelled unless you have a work or study permit, these changes will apply even if you already have travel booked, have previously booked travel plans or a previously valid eTA.
Who can apply for an eTA under the new requirements?
You will be eligible for an eTA if you meet the following requirements:
- Hold a valid and unexpired U.S. visa.
- Have held a Canadian visa within the last ten years.
